Michael Dunlop smashes the lap record around the Isle of Man Course during practice
Riding his Hawk Racing Honda Fireblade Superbike, Michael Dunlop unofficially blew away the current lap record with a 135.531 mph average speed over the 37.75-mile road course.
However, as the record was broken during a practice session, the official existing lap record of 135.452 mph set by Peter Hickman in the 2018 Senior race still stands.
Up to that point Hickman on his FHO Racing BMW had been the man to beat, but Dunlop set out a strong marker Friday afternoon with a 134.270 mph lap from a standing start. As the clock ticked down, he pushed deeper and cracked the 135.531 mph average on a flying lap.
Hickman had been delayed during the Superbike/Superstock practice session, after breaking down in the previous Supersport/Supertwins practice session.
With this sort of pace being set during practice, all eyes will be on next week’s race, with few doubting the current official record will eventually fall, with Dunlop the favourite to take that honour.
