TRAILER: Over the top freeway pileups, explosions, light comedy and California Highway Patrol Officers Jon Baker and Frank "Ponch" Poncherello are coming back from March 30th as CHIPS is released in cinema’s.
Those of us of a suitable age will remember the original TV series screened from 1977 to 1983 with the trouble-prone and macho Ponch, then played by Erik Estrada, partnered with leveled-headed Jon (Larry Wilcox) as the two patrolled the Los Angeles streets and Highways getting into all forms or trouble.
As real-life CHP motor officers rarely ride in pairs, in early episodes this was explained away by placing the trouble-prone Ponch on probationary status, with Jon assigned as his field training officer. Eventually, by the end of the first season, this subplot faded away (Ponch completed his probation) as audiences were used to seeing the two working as a team.
It’s not going to be a remake or retelling of the original series and has been described as Lethal Weapon crossed with Bad Boys, but with a twist.
Ponch (Michael Peña) is an FBI agent who goes undercover as an officer to find a group of crooked cops. Baker (Dax Shepard), on the other hand, is going to be a retired X-Games motorcycle rider who takes a job as a cop because all he knows how to do is ride motorcycles.
Anyway, enough of the talking, now watch the trailer. We’ll be releasing more later…
